This week ended great. I had been feeling bad about my accounting class, but today I gave them their test on the current chapter and they did great! It felt good to see them succeed and to be a part of their success. I also enjoyed using positive reinforcement in my classes this week. I decided early on in the week that if my classes behaved well that we would listen to music during class time on Friday. Turns out they all did great, so today we listened to music all day. It was a blast for me and the students. I made sure I only played music with appropriate messages and lyrics and it was great. The student still stayed on task, and they expressed they wanted to behave all the time to get this reward! So awesome!
What I would have changed this week had to do with accounting, again. I made a small mistake answering a question and even though it wasn’t a big deal I feel like I totally loose the respect of the students when that happens. Anyway, I was definitely upset about it, but I decided that all I could do was make sure I know more for next time. I feel accounting is a hard subject to teach the first time around because there seem to be a million details you need to be on top of. I know it is not the end of the world when you make a mistake, but I would sure like to avoid them in the future!

Wow do I ever agree with you Sandy! I made crucial blunders this past Tuesday in Accounting. I feel I get most upset with myself like you because no matter how horrible I am in Accounting, I am the teacher and should know the material. But you are right, there is a million things that you have to know and it is terribly hard finding the time to re-teach yourself everything with the limited time we have. Yes I wish I could avoid mistakes like you, but gotta roll with the punches, right?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you about accounting. My studnets did much better on this last test than previous ones also. It makes us feel like we are doing what we are supposed to and teaching the material and content in a way that the students understand. Finally.
ReplyDeleteWe all makes mistakes and just have to learn from them. Take that mistake and grow from it. It will only make you a stronger teacher. Only a few more weeks left. Keep up all you hard work.
Accounting is probably one of the harder classes to teach and it seems like we have all had our troubles. However, the way it seems we all had students with positive results. I just gave a test on Friday and the students did great with posting. It makes us all feel great when this happens. Learn from your mistake and it will allow you to become a better teacher. You'll do even better in the future. Have a great upcoming week Sandy!
ReplyDeleteWhen students know a reward is on the line they seem to work harder. I believe this tactic is very beneficial but not to be abused. When students succeed it makes you feel great because the students understand what you’re teaching and you like to see them all do well.
ReplyDeleteMaking mistakes will happen but just letting the students know you made one they will respect you more for that. I made a mistake in my International Business class the first day, I just told the students my mistake, I was wrong, and here is was the correct answer is. This will happen when teaching and the best thing to do is just own up to your mistake and move on. Just keep up the hard work and things will get better.
Sandy – We all make mistakes and to learn from them and move on is the best things to do. We are only human.
ReplyDeleteI used to call it “Fun Fridays”. We can’t do it every week, but it is nice to treat the students when they do well…A.K.A. your positive reinforcement expert topic! Great learning for all us teachers! Thanks for a job well done Sandy!
