This week I felt like I was really able to get my feet wet teaching. I taught two keyboarding classes for the entire week, and it was nice to be able to repeat a lesson twice. Teaching a lesson twice I think helps you learn a lot and get a second chance. Keyboarding is obviously a basic class to teach, so I think it will be interesting when I get a chance to teach a lecture style course. My lecture course will be Accounting so I will be jumping right into the intense stuff! I think that lesson planning will be more interesting in a content course because you can add a little more of your own flair. Adding flair to keyboarding is difficult but of course I am trying.
If I could change something about this week it would be being able to get into my elementary observation. I have schedule the observation two weeks in a row and both times we have had snow days! What are the odds? Anyway I did enjoy the week, and I am getting a handle on the names of the students in my classes.

Sandy, I would definitely have to agree about being able to teach a lesson twice - it has been very beneficial for me as well. For me it's really helped me learn how to pace myself and also it's helped me be prepared for concepts and material that I may have to be a little better at explaining/providing examples for with the second group, if the first group had a problem "getting it."
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you're in the practice of doing this, but one thing I find beneficial is keeping a pen on me at all times, and keeping my lesson plan somewhere that it is very easily accessible so that I can jot notes down at any time - kind of common sense, but it's been beneficial for me.
Good luck with accounting when you take that over as well! I'm actually rather glad that I don't have to teach any accounting courses, but more power to you! ;)
Sandy, sounds like you have had good luck with your lessons so far. I'm beginning two classes of Web Page Design on Monday as well, and I feel that the second time around will be better as it usually gets better the more you do something. I also have found it somewhat different to had a lot of flair to it so far, because we are just going through projects to get the students familiar with Front Page. That has been the hardest part so far. I'll be teaching Accounting shortly too, so keep your head up. You'll do great with it!
ReplyDeleteI agree that teaching a lesson twice you get thee chance to add things and fix it for the second time around. I have not had that opprotunity yet but I will by the next few weeks. Content courses require more creativity and flair but I am sure you will have no problem adding that into your lessons.
